The Client

Mi9 is one of Australia’s leading digital media firms and a member of Nine Entertainment Company. Its products include online publishing, data strategies, consumer insights and ad tech. Premium sites include ninemsn, Nine News, Wide World of Sports and TheFix and it reaches over 12.92 million Australian users per month.

The Brief

Mi9 had just launched, and an essential new role for them was Director of Specialist Sales.

They wanted someone to drive the overarching vision and product go to market strategy across the extensive network of sites and products in their back catalogue.


Hiring someone who had been through a similar process with a large, complex publisher was identified as the ideal. This meant that the required a skill-set was rare, and potentially difficult to find in the local market.

The role was a critical one: things were changing so fast it needed to be filled immediately, so Mi9 didn’t lose ground to the competition.

We leveraged our global network, and quickly compiled a shortlist of international talent. Five candidates, three interviews.


We found the successful candidate working in London as Head of Digital from a major publisher. We coordinated Skype calls and local meetings before arranging for him to fly to Australia for a series of interviews. We then mediated around salary discussions, advised around immigration processes and contract variables
